We live in a world of distinction, division, and segregation. There are certain specific things that set out each person or thing from another. A clear example is that of men and women. Men and women are obviously different in appearance. Women possess certain physical features that men do not have. Men, on the other hand, also possess certain features that women do not have. But with everything, there are exceptions. There are men with breasts like women and there are some women with facial hairs which are typical of men. One such woman is Indian born Harnaam Kaur.
Harnaam is a motivational speaker and a life coach among many other things. She was born on 20th November, 1990, making her about 30 years old now. People have always looked at her in a different way because of how she looks. Females are not supposed to grow beards so why did she get one? Well, here’s the story.
At a tender age, she was diagnosed with a rare condition. She had an excess of some male hormones, specifically androgens. Androgens are the hormones that stimulate hair growth among many other things in males. Males have it as well as females but it is in a greater level in men. Any woman with higher levels of these hormones suffers from what is known as polycystic ovary syndrome. And an effect of this syndrome is excessive hair growth, including facial hair such as beards.
According to Harnaam, her early childhood was filled with bullying and abuse because she was odd in this way. She could shave off all those hairs only to see them grow back again in no time. She later on learned to embrace who she was. This landed her a role as an ambassador for body positivity, and also as a motivational speaker. She now has large audiences and encoureages them to accept who they are. She says that she has no other body to live in so the best she can do is to accept what she has, with all its special oddness. And so must you. She is an inspiration to people all over the world.
Her current religion is Sikhism. And it condemns cutting of hair. As such, Harnaam uses her religion as justification for her non-shaving of her beard now. She converted at age 16. She holds a Guinness World Record for being the youngest woman to grow a full beard.
